DC-Motors in laboratory equipment for Point-of-care analysis devices

Point of Care

In intensive care units, outpatient departments or doctors’ practices: sometimes, there is no time to send samples into a large scale automated laboratory. The point of care analysis provides results quicker and is often used to check heart enzymes, blood gas values, electrolytes, other blood values or verify the presence of pathogens like SARS-CoV-2. The analysis is almost fully automated. Due to their use close to patients’ beds, Point of Care (PoC) applications demand drive solutions that are small, as quiet as possible and highly reliable. FAULHABER DC micromotors with graphite or precious-metal commutation as well as stepper motors are therefore the right choice.

PoC analysis systems are portable, light weight, flexible and could provide results very fast. They can be moved from one patient room to another and as they usually don’t take up much space, they are operated in the immediate vicinity of the patient, hence the name point of care. As they are almost fully automated, very little training is required for the medical personnel.

FAULHABER drives are used in the PoC analysis for several steps. Depending on the function of the analysis process, miniature drive systems are used for the disposition of samples, for mixing with reagents, rotating or shaking. At the same time, PoC systems must be compact, easy to transport and occupy very little space when used on-site. In the case of battery-powered systems, a highly efficient drive solution is necessary for enabling a long operating time.

Drive systems for these applications must be as compact and as dynamic as possible. FAULHABER DC micromotors are compact in size, highly efficient and offer a high power/weight ratio. In addition, they satisfy the requirements like high reliability, long service life, expanded product life cycle and low maintenance.

Anyone suffering from symptoms such as a cough, fever or headaches and muscle pains today tries to ascertain as quickly as possible whether they’ve been infected with corona, a cold or the flu. This is performed most easily using a swab. The sample can then be sent to a large-scale laboratory or –…
