With pulse width modulation (PWM), the carrier is a pulse with constant pulse frequency (PWM switching frequency). The average value of a voltage can be set steplessly in proportion to the pulse width by means of PWM. The setting of the reduced voltage is possible with relatively low power loss since the circuit breakers are only operated in two states: completely blocked or completely switched through. Thus, the PWM control of motors offers a low-loss option for operating DC-motors.
