Tattoo machine

Even the most famous Stone Age man, "Ötzi," who was found on an Alpine glacier, had tattoos. The artistic pricking and dyeing of human skin was already widespread in many different cultures a long time ago. Today, it is now almost a global megatrend, partly thanks to motorized tattoo machines. They can apply decoration to the skin far faster than with the traditional needle between the fingers of the tattooist. When we talk about tattooing and tattoos, we are using words of Polynesian origin. In Samoan, tatau means "correct" or "in precisely the right way." This is a reference to the elaborate, ritualistic tattoo art of the local cultures. During the colonial era, seafarers brought tattoos and the word back from Polynesia and introduced a new fashion: Skin decoration.

These days, numerous tattoo studios can be found in every large city. They offer everything, from a small yin-yang symbol on the ankle to large-scale decoration of whole body parts. Every shape and design you can imagine are possible and the images on the skin are often highly artistic.

The technical foundation for this is the essential skill of the tattooist, but also the right tool. A tattoo machine functions similarly to a sewing machine: One or more needles oscillate and thereby puncture the skin. The pigment is injected at the desired part of the body at a rate of several thousand pricks per minute.

In modern tattoo machines, the needle is moved by an electric motor. The quality of the drive plays a crucial role. It must run as quietly as possible and with virtually zero vibration. Since a single tattoo session can last several hours, the machine must be incredibly light, but must nevertheless apply the necessary power – and do so for hours on end and throughout many sessions.
