DC-Motors in gyroscopic mounting platform for ocean filming

Camera motion

The final, last minute of extra time, slightly to the right, roughly 18 meters from the goal: This free kick could decide everything. The player that will take it is known for his slightly curved banana shots. The camera captures every drop of sweat and the absolute concentration on his face. The camera is mounted on a boom and is pointed precisely at the evening's potential hero by FAULHABER motors.

In film recordings they remain out of sight, but in live transmissions of sport events we sometimes see them in action: Moving, lightweight cranes with a camera at the end of a boom. With their view from a raised position, they enable spectacular shots that sports fans enjoy both live and during the slow-motion recap. With astounding speed and precision, the crane and camera find the perfect viewing angle for magically reproducing every action on screen and capturing all the vital details.

Similar cranes are also used for nature documentaries, for example when making popular films about whales, seals and penguins. The booms are mounted on boats or ships. In such scenarios, the camera must be able to focus quickly on the observed animal as it suddenly emerges. To ensure that the frame does not constantly wobble and shake, it is also necessary to offset the movement of the water vehicle. This is done using gyroscopes and electric motors that respond extremely quickly but start up gently and smoothly, for example the FAULHABER 24-V DC-motor with 38-mm diameter and matching planetary gearhead.

The orientation of the remote-controlled camera mount at the end of the crane boom is determined by small, high-performance DC-motors with a low mass and compact dimensions. They must also accelerate smoothly and without delay, meaning that power must be applied very evenly. FAULHABER offers the optimal, high-quality drive solution for this application too.

Small cameras for big emotions

Fans want to get as close as possible and the media must deliver: a subtle twitch at the corner of the trainer's mouth, contentious fraction-of-an-inch decisions or once-in-a-lifetime events. In the competition to deliver the most spectacular images, cameras are ahead of the field, right in the…
